TIPS FOR PHOTOGRAPHING YOUR PETS, WITH DAVID DARCY

David Darcy is Australia’s most renowned animal photographer and spends his time travelling with his four happy hounds, taking pictures of Australia’s most beautiful pets.

If, like me, you are not the best photographer in the world, these tips from David should help you have some super snaps of your pets this Christmas or indeed, any time of year…

David Darcy says:

“Get creative and go wild when photographing with your pets!  Remember, the more fun you have modelling with your pet, the more genuine the photos will be”.

Here are some personal tips on how to perfectly capture the Christmas spirit within your pet.

  • Eyes are the most important focal point of a photograph.  Make sure your camera focuses on your dog’s big beautiful eyes as well as yours, rather than your face or nose.
  • Unlike photographing kids, dogs need to be ignored a little because giving them too much attention will make them want to play.  So don’t dangle a Christmas toy by the camera!  Instead, give them a small object to play with or chew on to distract them while getting that perfect shot.
  • Take photos when they’re getting sleepy.  Christmas time is exciting but save that high-energy for the day of.  It’s easier to photograph pets when they’re tired.
  • Be patient and use sounds or noises to grab their attention towards the camera.  Just as your pet is about to fall asleep, make a soft noise like a duck or a quiet whistle and snap a picture with those sleepy little eyes.
  • If your pet has a lot of energy, let them run around for a bit and help them settle down for the photo.  You’ll get a great natural shot of them with their tails wagging and tongue hanging.

  1. I know Kaye! I can;t help thinking that even an expensive camera wouldn’t improve my shots! Doesn’t stop me taking photos though – thank goodness for mobile phones!
