HELPFUL TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOME PET FRIENDLY
You may be bringing a pet home for the first time or attempting to improve your existing pet’s surroundings. Ashley Hirst has some tips for us on making your home pet friendly…
Owning a pet is a huge responsibility and it’s very important that you plan well ahead for their arrival into their new home. Your pet is more than just an animal; these furry friends require lots of attention, time and a safe comfortable home.
When you’re planning a home for both the pet and yourself, or if you’re bringing the pet to their new home for the first time, then you must consider the pet’s needs.
Tips on making your home pet friendly
The most appropriate way to approach making your home pet-friendly is to start with looking through the eyes of your pet. It is best to position yourself in your pet’s perspective and get down on your fours and have a good scan around your home. It is important to assess all corners that your loved pet has access to, by way of jumping or climbing. It’s surprising how many potential dangers a home inspection can unveil.
Here are some potential hazards to watch out for:
- Never leave human food and medications lying around where your pet can easily reach. Curious pets, such as cats, are known to climb, so you will need to eliminate any “ladders” that they can easily climb on to gain access. You should also throw away your daily rubbish, so they are unable to rummage through anything that is potentially harmful, like chicken bones or fruits and seeds that can be poisonous. If you have a bin, then make sure the lid is firmly shut.
- Look for anything that could cause potential suffocation, strangulation, and choking. Keep your window cords short and cut through any loops. You should also look to unplug wires or cover them up.
- Pets are extremely clever and can quickly learn how to manoeuvre cupboards to gain access. You should consider adding a child safety lock or keep certain rooms locked so they can’t wander in when they’re bored.
- Keep your antifreeze securely locked away. This must seem like an absolute no-brainer, but for whatever reason, cats and dogs love the smell and taste of the stuff. Research shows that up to 10,000 pets die annually purely from antifreeze poisoning. Make sure to keep it away in a locked cupboard that too high to reach for your pet. If you do use be careful to clean up any spillages immediately.
- Keep your windows locked. Cats have been known to fall out of windows as they love to climb. If you’re leaving your house or a room unattended, then you must lock the window. If you need to leave the window open then make sure that the window is secure and properly setup. Window guards are not safe for cats as they are able to climb through the gaps.
- If you keep indoor plants or have a garden with lots of flowers, then it is highly recommended that you make sure that these are pet-friendly as they can be potentially hazardous and be fatal if consumed by your pet
