5 THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR DOG THIS EASTER

What are you doing this Easter? Are you involving your pets in your activities? Well perhaps you would like to but are wondering just what you can do. Here are 5 things to do with your dog this Easter weekend…

1. Visit a dog-friendly cafe.

Every city and most country towns have cafes that welcome dogs. Ok, you may have to sit outdoors (fingers crossed for good weather!) but at least you’ll have company – your dog! If you visit a truly dog friendly cafe they may have water bowls for your canine companion and some may even have doggy drinks such as Pupachinos.

In Sydney, we have Cafe Bones, a great outdoor cafe for dogs and their owners. Yes, the focus here is on dogs. It’s best if your dog is dog friendly but even then, you need to be mindful of your dog’s behaviour. Chilli dog is not generally a resource guarder but she certainly does not want any other dogs to have her Pupachino!

 2. Visit a beach near you

Everyone loves a day at the beach. Dogs are no exception, however, it is often very difficult to find a dog-friendly beach when you live in the city. Sydney is a beautiful city but certainly not high in the dog-friendly beach stakes. However, there are little pockets of dogginess like Bayview in Sydney’s Pittwater region. Just a glorious day out for dogs.

Wherever you take your dog, remember to read any rules and regulations and to pick up poo from the beach. Oh and let your dog dig to their heart’s content. The tide will put everything back to normal. Perfect for digging dogs!

If you don’t have a beach near you, why not create one. Fill a container with sand and dig some dog toys into the sand. Let your dog play.

3. Out of town

Take your dog on an outing for the day. Why not visit the beach, if you live in the country or go for a country walk, if you live in the city. A change of scenery is good for dogs. All those new scents to sniff can quickly tire a dog out.

If you live in Sydney, I suggest taking your dog to the Central Coast or to the South Coast. There, they have many dog-friendly beaches for your dog to run and play. Chilli dog will love it.

Remember to take some fresh water with you and, if you are going for the entire day, your dog’s food. Keep your dog safe in the car by using a dog harness.

4. Plan some dog activities

Many of us like to relax at Easter time (chocolate time?!) and doggy activities seem just too energetic. But why not plan for some in the coming months. Take a look at what dog activities are on offer in your area. Some cities even offer free dog training eg. City of Sydney

In Sydney, have a look at the Farmer Dave Dog Centre. Known as the place where you give your dog a job! Perfect for working breeds of dogs such as Border Collies, Cattle Dogs and Kelpies. But also great for all breeds, as there is a sport for every dog. They have scent sports, manners classes, herding activities and classes for dogs who are reactive to other dogs. You need to sign up for a class, so check them out this Easter.

5. Enjoy staying home with your pet… but do something a little extra with them.

So you’ll be staying home, indulging in a little chocolate – or perhaps a lot of chocolate! (Remember no chocolate for your pets!) Why not do something a little extra for your pet. Teach them a new trick.

My suggestion is to play Find the Treat. Hide a treat, either under a plastic cup or under a clean t-towel. Place four towels or cups on the floor and hide the treat under one of them. Let your dog find it. They love this game. Spread out the cups or towels and watch your dog’s nose work to sniff out the treats.

Whatever you decide to do with your pets this Easter, stay safe and relax.
