Prevention and treatment of pet fleas and ticks is something all pet owners desire. Here are some guidelines to follow in keeping your pets free from fleas and ticks, thanks to Muzi Tsolakis from Protect Pest Control in Melbourne…
Your Pet is a part of your family and requires your attention when it comes to keeping them safe from ticks and fleas. And when it comes to ticks, prevention is better than cure as the saying goes.
Fleas and ticks can be a big menace to your pet. So it is advisable to deal with this issue right at the very onset. If you’re concerned about this below are a few guidelines for you to keep fleas and ticks at bay.
Ensure All Year-Round Treatment against Fleas and Ticks
Fleas can be quite a menace all year round. But 65 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer months is very favourable for them to increase in numbers. Make it a point to always check your pets for stray ticks and fleas that may have latched on while you were out walking or playing with your dog.
At times the treatment you used during the winter months will not be of any help during the summer months. So in addition to regular visits to the vet, get in touch with a professional pest control service to help you handle any flea issues.
Make Use of New Preventive Products
When you suddenly realise your pet has an infestation or infection, it is highly recommended you buy a fresh batch of medication rather than use the ones that have been sitting in your cupboard for a long time.
It’s always best to update yourself on the new and quick relief products so that you use the one best-suited to give your furry-friend relief.
Remember Treatment for Cats and Dogs Varies
Fleas and ticks are the main cause of quite a number of health problems in cats and dogs.
The treatment you are using for your dog cannot be used to treat your cat. So while dealing with them bear in mind the treatment used is very different as the products that you have been using for your dog have some components that are life-threatening when used to treat your cat. As the saying goes “one man’s food may be another’s poison”.
Just as in the Case of Humans, Hygiene is Important
Your dog needs to be bathed regularly to avoid any accumulation of dirt that may encourage these pests. Even when they urinate or pass a stool it’s important to see that they are clean and do not have any remains of their feces stuck to their fur or rear. If so wipe then with a damp cloth or tissue till clean again.
Have the Grass and Shrubs Regularly Trimmed
As fleas like to live in tall grass it is best to have your lawn mower and all shrubs trimmed, regularly. Get rid of all dry moist leaves and clutter as ticks love these areas and thrive well.
Remember if the surroundings of your home are not tick-friendly, there’s an even slimmer chance that they might make their way into your house.
Regularly Check Your Pets for Ticks and Fleas
On returning home after walking your dog, it would be good to check your dog’s ears, armpits, his paws, and the nape of his neck to see if he has picked up any stray ticks.
At times the reindeer tick can be very hazardous. You will not even see the danger coming as it takes 24 hours for the effect of the tick to seep into the bloodstream. It would be advisable to intimate the veteran and keep a watch on your dog for any drastic reaction or behavioural problems like limping or lethargy.
Don’t Forget the Daily Brush down Routine
Regular brushing down your dog’s coat will help dislodge any stray fleas and ticks that have gone unnoticed.
During the cold weather, it is recommended that you brush your dog’s coat to avoid fur flying all around your home. Plus by brushing you can help brush off the dry skin thereby ensuring a healthier coat.
Use a Treatment for Ticks and Fleas All Year Round
Using a tick and flea treatment all year round will only help you keep a check on any stray fleas and ticks from making their home in your dog’s lovely fluffy coat.
Rid Your Yard of Useless Clutter
Your pets go into the garden or run around your home. And that is why you have to have your lawn mower regularly as fleas like tall grass.
Fleas and ticks also thrive well in warm moist places so to dissuade fleas and tick it would be wise to rid your garden of piled up dry leaves, wood or any other clutter your garden
Regular Check Up’s are a Must
Ensuring your pet is in good health is your priority. So to avoid an infestation of fleas, ticks and any such parasites that can lead to illness, it is highly recommended that you take your pet for a regular check-up. The vet can also help you with your queries about your persistent tick and fleas issues and how you can avoid them.
