Lots of pets hate the bangs and flashes of fireworks and at this time of year, with firework displays, stress is almost inevitable. If you have a stressed pooch or pussycat, you can read some emergency tips here. If the problem is really bad, consult your vet today for medication to see your pet through New Year.
Some of my clients have found comfort through the use of lavender or even hot water bottles for their stressed pets. Do you have a tip to share? Please add it to the comments and help other stressed pets.
@SerjBitza said: The first time I was outside with my dog during fireworks, he tried desperately to run away. Luckily I had him on a leash as well and I got his attention long enough to get him inside the house, where he paced nervously before hiding under the bed. After that incident I purchased Calming Paste from my vet, which is all natural containing B-vitamins, tryptophan, magnesium and chamomile. It's been used once so far, while we went camping the night before new year's eve. I keep my pooch inside on occasions that I think fireworks will occur such as new year's, Australia day, local show, etc. His safe space is under the bed so I make sure it's not too cluttered under there (we store boxes under the bed) and put chew toys and treats there for him. The tv or music gets turned up to help mask the noise and we act as if it's any other normal night, and if he looks too distressed we yawn and pretend we're tired, which helps to settle him. He has improved alot since we've had him. :)
One of the best way to get a pet ready for fireworks is to play rock music (or any music with significant drums or base) leading up to the fireworks display. Gradually turn the music up louder and louder until the display starts. This get's the pet acclimated to loud noises and seems to help (although not rid) the pet with the anxiety associated with fireworks.
